If you’re a fan of Young, you’ll like this:
“The Cubs/White Sox weekend series ended with a 6-0 blowout win for the Sox. Pretty pathetic effort for a Cubs team that looked like it was starting to show some fire and tenacity at last. The Cubs once again found themselves being stymied by John Danks, who would be a Cy Young candidate if he could ….:”

Check out who is making news again - Cruz! This time, Cubs Minor League Wrap — June 28. :
Anyone else want to just chuck the whole major league team and start over? Let’s see the lineup: 1. Thomas 2B 2. Castro SS 3. Vitters 3B 4. Fox 1B (We’ll count him as a minor leaguer) 5.Colvin LF 6. Clevenger C 7. Burke CF 8. Guyer RF 9. Jackson SP. OK, they’d lose 120 games. But they’d at least be interesting. And we’d get Bryce Harper next year.
Iowa Cubs
The I-Cubs were stopped by the Round Rock Express 8-4.
Greg Reinhard started and took the loss, giving up five runs in only three innings. Reinhard surrendered eight hits and a walk while fanning four.
Right fielder So Taguchi led off the game with his first home run of the year. It was his only hit in five trips to the plate.
Second baseman Luis Rivas went 2 for 4.
Tennessee Smokies
The Smokies were eclipsed by the Huntsville Stars, 3-2.
Marcos Mateo pitched well, allowing only one run on five hits in his five inning start. The one run scored on a solo home run. Mateo didn’t walk anyone and struck out two. He did hit two batters.
Jake Muyco took the loss in relief when he allowed a solo home run in the ninth. Muyco pitched one inning and allowed only that one home run. He struck out two.
Right fielder Doug Deeds was 2 for 4 and scored a run.
Daytona Cubs
The D-Cubs denied the Fort Myers Miracle, 5-1.
Andrew Cashner continues to put up zeros on the scoreboard, pitching another four innings today, allowing no runs on two hits. Cashner walked three and struck out three. He has now not allowed a run in his last three starts, which spanned 12 innings.
Dustin Sasser got the win because Cashner didn’t go five. He pitched three innings and allowed one unearned run on two hits and a walk. Sasser struck out four.
Second baseman Nate Samson had a big day. He went 4 for 5 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Peoria Chiefs
The Chiefs rode a nine-run eighth inning to skin the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, 15-6.
Starter Aaron Shafer had a rough game, allowing five runs on six hits over five innings. Shafer walked two and struck out two.
Jeffrey Beliveau is putting up some ridiculous numbers for Peoria this season. Today he pitched four innings and allowed one run on two hits and two walks. The ridiculous part was that he struck out eight. Beliveau has now struck out 72 batters in only 53 innings this season.
The Chiefs banged out 17 hits today, led by Drew Rundle, who was 4 for 5 with a double. Rundle scored three times and had one RBI.
Josh Vitters, Ryan Flaherty and Rebel Ridling each went 2 for 5 with a run scored. Vitters had one RBI, Flaherty two and Ridling three. Both of Ridling’s hits were doubles.
Right fielder Nelson Perez was 2 for 6 with two RBI and a run scored. We’re also past the MWL All-Star Break and I don’t think I’ve called him Nelson Cruz yet, which is something of a miracle. Not only do they have similar names, they’re similar players.
Boise Hawks
The Hawks came home today and managed to defeat the Yakima Bears, 3-2.
Jeffry Antigua got the win with four innings of shutout relief. He gave up three hits and a walk while striking out three.
Second baseman Logan Watkins was 2 for 4. Catcher Alvaro Sosa went 2 for 3.

A lot of people like this guy. I think Murphy is bad:
“The Jays’ affiliates had an off-day, a postponement, and a suspension. In the remaining 3 games, they went 2-1.
Sacramento 3 at Las Vegas 6
Brian Burres is pushing for a promotion! 11 days after spinning a masterful shut-out, the 28 year old pitched 7 innings of effective ball, allowing 3 runs on 9 hits and a walk while striking out 8 and getting 9 ground outs to only 4 flyouts. By the time he exited, the 51s had built a 6-3 lead which they never relinquished. Bill Murphy and Bryan Bullington each pitched a scoreless inning to ensure that this game was pitched entirely by guys who have been on the big club at some point this year. And whose first names start with B. Coincidence!
Las Vegas spread the offensive love around, with every starter getting a hit. Of note, J.P. Arencibia went 2-4 with a double and 2 ribbies, and Randy Ruiz had a double in 4 trips.
Portland at New Hampshire (suspended)
Charlotte 9 at Dunedin 8 (11 innings)
It was a wild one in Dunedin. Andrew Liebel got the start and had his first bad outing in a while, giving up 6 runs in just 4 and a third innings. However, only 2 of those runs were earned, and it really was a tough luck day for Liebel: he allowed unearned runs in three separate innings, and Kyle Ginley allowed 1 inherited runner to score, so this wasn’t simply one of those situations where one error leads to a whole bunch of unearned runs. Nevertheless, it wasn’t Liebel’s greatest outing.
Liebel’s mediocrity and the D-Jays’ horrific defense put them in a 7-0 deficit by the time the 6th inning rolled around, but they finally broke through against Jeremy Hall on 3 consecutive hits by Sean Shoffitt (single), Raul Barron (triple) and Moises Sierra (single). And then, in the 7th, Dunedin exploded for 6 more, highlighted by a 3-run homer by John Tolisano.
Charlotte tied the game up in the 8th, and a scoreless 9th sent the game to extras. In 3 innings, Dunedin was held baserunner-less by the Stone Crabs’ bullpen, and Charlotte won the game in the 11th by, you guessed it, scoring what turned out to be an unearned run charged to Tim Collins. Collins was otherwise good, pitching 3 innings, allowing 4 baserunners and striking out 3.
No hitter had a spectacular day, though Shoffit, Barron and Sierra each had 2 hits, and Tolisano had the aforementioned 3 run jack.
Young Henderson Alvarez was the story for Lansing on Sunday afternoon, going 6 innings while only allowing 5 hits, walking nobody and striking out 5. Alvarez allowed 1 run, and had a 7-6 GB-FB ratio. Unfortunately, he didn’t get the win, as the bullpen allowed the Dragons to tie it up in the 8th. But Lansing stormed right back with 2 runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, and Matthew Daly nailed it down with a perfect 9th inning for his 14th save.
Chris Emanuele reached base 3 times with a single and 2 walks, and A.J. Jimenez had 3 hits including a double, and drove in 2 runs to lead the Lansing offense.
Jamestown at Auburn - post-poned
GCL Jays - scheduled day off
By the way, ever wonder what attendance is like at minor league games? Well, much more extensive research could be done on this topic, and who knows how representative these attendance figures are, but for what it’s worth here were the crowd sizes for each of today’s minor league games:
Las Vegas: 2,195
Dunedin: 399
Lansing: 4,918
Elsewhere… Lake Elsinore beat High Desert 33-18. Seriously. There were 58 hits. Also, Lake Elsinore walked 13 times, while High Desert only walked once. Weird.
Three Stars!
3. Brian Burres - 7 IP, 3ER, 9K
2. A.J. Jimenez, 3-4, 2B, 2 RBIs
1. Henderson Alvarez - 6 innings, 5 baserunners, 1 run, 5 Ks

In case those haters on ESPN didn’t tell you, Gary Sheffield had the game of his life last night, driving home 10 runs on five — count ‘em, five — homers. Of course, such an outburst probably shouldn’t have surprised us. Turns out, Sheffield is leading the Mets in dingers. He’s also hitting .277 and is 40-years-young.
OK, you caught me. One of the above statements isn’t true. Bet you can’t guess which one!
If you chose the first, well, you win. Shucks.

I wonder how Davis’s fans feel - The Jays’ affiliates had more rain-outs (2) than wins (1) on the night. Enough said. Davis Romero received the start and was not overly sharp. He allowed four runs on eight hits and one walk over 5.1 innings of work. Bryan Bullington relieved him and allowed one run in 1.2 innings, but struck out four. Bill Murphy had a scoreless inning and struck out the side. Brian Wolfe, though, took the loss when he allowed three runs on two hits and two walks without getting an out. Offensively, JP Arencibia was 2-for-4 with a double and three runs scored. Kevin Howard also had two hits, as did Michael Barrett. Angel Sanchez had three hits, including a double. David Dellucci was 3-for-4 with two homers and he scored three runs.
Luis Perez, the Jays’ representative in the upcoming Futures Game, struggled with his control and walked five batters in 6.1 innings. He gave up just three hits, though, and allowed three runs (two earned). Adrian Martin finished the game with 2.1 scoreless innings. Brian Jeroloman went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs. Scott Campbell went 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Nick Gorneault, Adam Calderone, Brian Dopirak, and Darin Mastroianni also had hits.
Dunedin - postponed
Starter Josh Wells had another ugly outing and allowed six runs on nine hits and one walk in 2.1 innings of work. Ryan Koch allowed one run one four hits in 3.2 innings. Keith Meyer worked two scoreless innings and allowed just one hit. Hunter Moody worked one scoreless inning and struck out two, while allowing one hit and one walk. Lead-off man Justin McClanahan went 0-for-5 with three Ks. Brian Van Kirk and Mark Sobolewski each had two hits. Balbino Fuenmayor, AJ Jimenez, Johermyn Chavez, Tyler Pastornicky, and Chris Emanuele each had one hit. Sobolewski and Jimenez drove in runs. Van Kirk had the only extra base hit, which was a double.
Scott Gracey had another poor start and allowed five runs in 4.2 innings on six hits and two walks. Willi Mendez also struggled and allowed three runs in 1.1 innings, thanks to three hits and two walks. Dan Miller and Zach Outman also gave up runs. Offensively, Jimmy Gonzalez and Welinton Ramirez each had two hits - and a double a piece for the only extra base hits of the game. Randy Schwartz had a solo homer - his fourth of the year (He only has five hits in total). Jack Murphy went 1-for-3 and Luis Hurtado was 1-for-4.
Gulf Coast League Jays - postponed
The Three Stars:
3. Adrian Martin for 2.1 scoreless innings
2. Brian Jeroloman for two hits and two RBI
1. David Dellucci, three hits, two homers
what do you think? This will be shocking news for Davis fans, but there are those of you who will say that you saw it coming from a mile away. I can’t say I’m all that surprised though. Davis is cool, I really hope this doesn’t affect the season.

Jones hasn’t really made me a fan. I think everyone would be fine without him,
The Cubs used the longball — the White Sox‘ favorite tool — to beat the South Siders 5-4; Jake Fox had three hits and a HR and Geovany Soto smacked a three-run blast that was the difference in the game.
And I suppose all you want to talk about is Milton Bradley. Bradley and manager Lou Piniella had words in the dugout after Bradley flied to left in the sixth inning and, to make a long story short — and the story may yet get longer — Lou sent Milton home, but not before Bradley had slugged the Gatorade cooler in the dugout and, according to the WGN postgame show, may have even had words with Carlos Zambrano, who reportedly headed to the clubhouse after Milton.
ITOLDYOUSOITOLDYOUSOITOLDYOUSO.
Milton Bradley has been a clubhouse problem his entire career. Let me tell you a couple of things I have recently learned, which I had earlier decided not to post. Now, though, it seems imperative to do so. I am not naming names here to protect my sources; however, I have absolutely no doubt that the stories I have been told are true.
1) I have a friend who knows several writers who covered Bradley on a daily basis when he was playing with another team. These writers called him “a clubhouse cancer in the truest sense of the word”.
2) I have another friend who is close personal friends with a major league player who was a teammate of Bradley’s at one time. This major league player called Bradley “the biggest asshole he had ever had as a teammate”.
You can ask as often as you like, but I will not name these people. However, I stand by what I was told as the truth.
All of this had to be known to Cubs management — they’re not blind, and they see and know far more than I do. Why Jim Hendry chose to sign Bradley in the face of overwhelming evidence that this was a bad idea is inexplicable. If the Cubs had wanted to sign an oft-injured outfielder with a big contract, they could have traded for Andruw Jones, who is actually starting to hit again and in fewer plate appearances than Bradley, has more doubles, homers and RBI. Granted, RBI aren’t necessarily the best measure of offensive performance, but Bradley was signed to a huge contract to be a middle-of-the-lineup guy, to be the force in the lineup, to play the way he did last year, only for a full season. He’s got 16 RBI in 200 PA. Jake Fox has 11 RBI in 43 PA.
Unfortunately, save simply releasing him and eating a huge amount of money, or benching him to the point where the Cubs won’t have to pay the 2011 vesting option (at which time the Players’ Association would probably step in and say, “You can’t do that”), we are stuck with Bradley. Bruce Miles’ blog, linked above, says:
Apparently, the Cubs feel that Bradley is acting selfishly. GM Jim Hendry talked with us in the runway after the game and said he wanted players to be “all in.”
I pressed him on that, and he said that “all in” means all for the team. Some of Bradley’s teammates also are beginning to wonder.
Hendry also said he’d talk with Bradley tomorrow.
Hendry is right, of course, but how could he have not seen that Milton Bradley isn’t an “all in” kind of guy and never has been? This one’s on you, Jim. You made a big mistake. You need to fix it, and yesterday. To all those who said, “100 games of Milton Bradley is worth more than a full season of Adam Dunn“, with all due respect, in this case running the numbers don’t tell the whole story. Not one of you — not anyone — can say to me that the Cubs wouldn’t have been better off with Adam Dunn in right field up to this point in 2009, defense be damned.
All of this is yet another unwelcome distraction from this season, and today was a nicely-played win, despite yet another bullpen meltdown from Carlos Marmol, who threw only 10 strikes in 24 pitches. Whatever’s wrong with Marmol, someone better figure it out soon, because with Angel Guzman out, the Cubs don’t have a lot of other 8th-inning options. In fact, today, with Randy Wells having finished another fine seven innings (two mistakes were hit for homers, but those were his only mistakes) in 98 pitches, I think I would have sent him out there for the 8th.
Meanwhile, we are now seeing the Jake Fox who tore up Triple-A for the first two months. He had three hits including his second homer in as many days, and played a competent third base, handling five grounders (including starting a DP) without incident. The only ball he couldn’t get to was Scott Podsednik’s bunt, and not many third basemen could have made that play. Even after Aramis Ramirez returns, he may not be at full strength and may have to take a couple days off every week. Fox has proven he can handle the position at least that often and needs to be in the lineup every day.
And, Geovany Soto hit a three-run homer that was the difference in the game. Since May 13 — 105 at-bats — Geo is hitting .276/.366/.523 with 7 HR and 19 RBI, very close to his production level of 2008. The Cubs definitely need him to keep this up and he appears to be back on track.
About Bradley, I don’t know what the final disposition will be of this incident, and the accumulated problems he’s had in less than half a season. All I know is that it seems imperative that the Cubs add another hitter, and soon.
My first visit to the Cell since the Cub series a year ago found some changes — there is now a new scoreboard in RF showing out-of-town scores batter-by-batter, and also updated stats on each pitcher and batter in the game taking place there. What I also found were some more fan-unfriendly policies. They were blocking anyone without an outfield seat from going through the concourse in the outfield — thus giving those ticketholders unfettered access to the park, but no one could walk around. This made things extremely crowded going out of the park after the game was over, in addition to some red-shirted ushers being quite overzealous about checking tickets, to the point that you couldn’t even say “hi” to people you just wanted to say “hi” to unless you sneaked past them. The crowd was late-arriving; many empty seats were left at game time, though they eventually filled in for the sellout of 39,015. I heard Alfonso Soriano booed when he led off the game — I wondered who was booing louder, Sox fans or Cubs fans? Overall the atmosphere was much more like previous Sox/Cubs series than the two games at Wrigley last week — so perhaps the idea that those games being weekdays being responsible for the muted atmosphere there is true.
Finally, sign seen (and I wish I’d had a good camera to take a shot of it) — someone had taken a large posterboard and put a photo of Michael Jackson with “Sox” photoshopped onto his jacket. Clever and well-timed.

Jones hasn’t really impressed me so far. I think we’d be fine without him -
The message has been sent to Alexei Ramirez.
What he does with it now, that’s on him. But he might want to take it to heart, considering that Ozzie Guillen is the sender, and inevitably can be the executioner.
Upset with what Guillen called “lazy” defense in Thursday’s win over Los Angeles, including a defensive lapse that allowed Los Angeles to tie the game in the seventh inning and extend the game to the 13th, the White Sox manager called Ramirez out following the marathon, and then made it a topic for discussion on Friday.
“One thing about it, I don’t care if he hates me or if he loves me, but this kid has an unbelievable future,” Guillen said of Ramirez. “This kid can be one of the best in the game. My job is to get him there. How I’m going to do it, we’ll see how, but I learned that from Braves manager Bobby Cox. When Bobby Cox told former Atlanta outfielder Andruw Jones right in his face, ‘I benched you because you’re better than that and you’re going to be a superstar.’ I think this kid has the same tools to be a star. If he doesn’t play the game right, he’s going to have a tough time playing for me.”
Guillen was asked if he had personally spoken to Ramirez about that, specifically the idea that Ramirez takes his offensive miscues out to the field with him at times, and said he had been spoken to before about it. Not only spoken to, but spent a weekend series on the bench because of it back in May.
“I should talk to him again, just to get it out of my system,” Guillen said. “But I’m going to let him go because I might say the wrong thing to him and all of a sudden we might create a monster. I hope he reads the paper. My coaching staff will take care of that and we’ll see after that. It’s not because I hate the kid, it’s not because I’m picking on him. You all saw the way he went about his business after he made an out.
“I want him to be the best shortstop he can be. Alexei Ramirez is not going to be winning batting titles, he’s not going to win RBI titles. The only thing this kid can do is win Gold Glove. And I know he has a chance to win a Gold Glove. Well, play like a Gold Glover.
“When I made a statement in January that this kid should be one of the best shortstops in the game, one of the best shortstops for the White Sox, I meant it. I meant it because I’ve seen it. That’s why it’s my job, Joey Cora’s job, to get this kid in the right place for the rest of his career.”
Cora, who works with the infielders on defense, as well as bench coach, did make it known that Ramirez had received the criticism from Guillen, and was spoken about what he did in the win.
“The information has been given, no doubt about it,” Cora said. “I think he’s played, for the most part, he has played good. But when the ugliness shows, it shows very, very ugly. Has there been a lack of focus? No doubt about it and he knows it. He should be a guy out there that is the best player on our team. He has the potential to be the best player on our team, no doubt about that. At times he gets frustrated because of his offense and he takes it to the defense, and when you’re a shortstop as good as he is, that can’t happen.”
What happens next? Well, that’s on Ramirez.
It’s not like the Sox don’t have options, considering prized rookie Gordon Beckham has played most of his life at shortstop until the switch to third this season.
“That’s up to him,” Cora added, when asked what’s next. “It’s like giving up at-bats. Sometimes you go up there and give up an at-bat. Well, he goes out there and gives up a defensive play that shouldn’t be given up. That can’t happen.
” He’s young and he hasn’t had as much experience as we all think, at least not on the big-league level. This is his second year, so hopefully he learns from this experience. He knows he’s a great shortstop, he can play defensively with anyone else in this game, but it’s a matter of taking a little bit more pride in it.”

A lot of fans like this guy. I think Harrison is awful,
Iowa Cubs The Iowa Cubs zapped the New Orleans Zephyrs, 5-4 in ten innings. Mitch Atkins had a no-hitter going through seven innings tonight, but the eighth inning was cruel, as a leadoff single broke up the no-hitter and eventually led to a four-run inning. Atkins’s final line was 7.1 innings, allowing three runs on three hits and a walk. Atkins fanned four. James Russell allowed a hit in a scoreless tenth to get his second win. Center fielder Sam Fuld went 4 for 5 with a double and two stolen bases. Fuld scored twice. Right fielder So Taguchi was 3 for 4 with a double and three RBI. Catcher Chris Robinson, first baseman Steve Clevenger and Shortstop Matt Camp each went 2 for 5 with an extra base hit and a run scored. Robinson tripled, the other two doubled. Camp’s double scored Clevenger and ended the game in the tenth inning. Tennessee Smokies The Smokies were baked by the Montgomery Biscuits, 8-4. Hung-Wen Chen had a rough outing tonight, giving up five runs on five hits and a walk over 5.1 innings. Chen did strike out six, which is very uncharacteristic of him. Third baseman Marquez Smith tripled in a 2 for 4 game. He scored once an had one RBI. Daytona Cubs The Daytona Cubs lost their religion to the Fort Myers Miracle, 6-4. Ryan Searle had not been pitching well lately, and tonight he got rocked again for six runs in 4.2 innings. Searle surrendered seven hits and one walk. He struck out one Miracle. One of the runs allowed was unearned. Center fielder Tony Campana was a perfect 4 for 4 tonight, with one RBI and one run scored. Left fielder Marwin Gonzalez was 2 for 4. Left fielder Josh Harrison was 2 for 4 with an RBI double.
Boise Hawks
The Hawks got into the win column tonight with a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes.

Mike Perconte got the with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Right fielder Jae-Hoon Ha was 2 for 3 with a double and a walk. He scored once and had one RBI.
